Good vs. Bad Anti-Viruses
My favorite is the BitDefender, although I never have used it (lol) the tech specs and the reviews sounds legit. However, the worst I think in my opinion is the Norton, it sucks because... it sucks

Avast is the best. Except it can cause bluescreens.

As a part owner of a tech company, I prefer Hitman and Malwarebytes. It's all I use. download a free copy of Hiren's boot CD if you get the chance, its AWESOME software and its free to use. It has tons of tools for every computer issue.
Re: Good vs. Bad Anti-Viruses
They are unrelated, it appears. Software won't ruin your hardware because of physical fail-safes built in. 40% of hard drives fail in the first year. you just have to keep backups of everything!

I have used Hiren's boot CD for a very long time now... glad to know other people use it.

Re: Good vs. Bad Anti-Viruses
I don't have a specific Anti Virus.
I use what I like to call "the big wall"
it is a combination of:
- Avast!, it's ability to create a virtual environment has proven useful to test my viru~ programs people send me.
- Threatfire, it tells me everything.
- Spybot Search and Destroy
But Avast! is the best.

That statement is both true, and false -
I have ruined hardware in a test environment before using software (I called it Purple Smoke, because thats what came out of the drive when i fried it... LOL)
Anyway, its true that nowadays the drives are built with automatic shutoff / failsafes if drives reach a certain RPM (speed), however older drives from ~2000 and before didnt have safeguards that worked too well.
