Need opinions: What makes an iPod/iPhone app popular?
I'm thinking about creating an iPod/iPhone app, but I need suggestions for a type of app that YOU would be willing to spend $0.99 - $1.99 on. I have some of the very popular games such as Cut The Rope, Enigmo, and Angry Birds... but I don't have any original ideas right now...
Please post your Ideas here - everyone who helps out with this project will of course be mentioned in the credits
( and please keep it clean... you know very well that iTunes won't allow "porn" apps or anything that's crude -_- )

It's all luck for a game to be popular.
Like temple run for example, is a really simple game. Run from the monkeys while dodging obstacles and getting points.
Most popular games have highscores, or a scoring system that makes the game addictive and fun.
Also, if I ever come up with an idea you use...I want $0.10 of each app sold.

I had an idea for a while now, and if you have experience with C++/C# I also have an example.
The idea is something like, inner programming language, it is simple like Assembly, but gives you more access. You can script your phone like you would with C#, so you can script things like a clock, or something. This may be a bad idea since:
1) you may have to write an /entire language/ for the phone.
2) if you give too much, the person might fry his/her phone.
But, here is the example of what the "custom code" would look like
Warning, massive amounts of code, open at your own risk

Warning, massive amounts of code, open at your own risk
- Spoiler:
- Code:
dothis(5,3,10,30,rgb(200,20,20),"YES");
function dothis(x,y,w,h,color,this)
popup("i did this.");
graphics.drawSquare(x,y,w,h,color);
if(this = "YES") then
popup("YES!");
end if
else
popup("NO!");
end else
end
Everything is saved to a file on the iPhone upon the "TEST THIS CODE" button
Now then, moving on!
Every tick this code will be read, tick interval can be
1) Set by the user
2) Calculated
Now, it will read through the file constantly, calling the function dothis(5,3,10,30,rgb(200,20,20),"YES"); every tick.
It now reads and puts the function dothis() and it's arguments 5,3,10,30,rgb(200,20,20),"YES" into temp memory to process every tick.
It stops reading it over and over if:
1) The RAM usage asplodes
2) The user tells it to stop
Now, we are going to call the function dothis() by searching for it in the code.
We found it, now do the first line of code
popup("i did this.");
The next,
graphics.drawSquare(x,y,w,h,color);
But wait, this has variables!
We look for the variables in the temp memory.
x,y,w,h,color
Moving on, we come to an "if",
if(this = "YES") then
We search for the variable this and get it's value, if its value is not "YES", then we look for a word called "end"
However, if it is, we do:
popup("YES!");
And then we add to the temp memory that there was a "if" operator, and it was correct
But let's say it is not.
Since it is not, we should put it in the temp-memory that the last line was an "if", and was not correct.
end if
Here is our "end".
If the next word is null, then we just stop and reprocess at the next tick, but it is not, the next word is if, which means the code reader can stop ignoring things at the next line.
Moving on,
The next line of code is else we now have to dig through our memory and look to see if the last "if" called was correct or not.
If it was, then we did as we did with the "if", we tell the engine to ignore the code until the next "end" or "end else".
Or, if it wasn't, then, we do as the code says.
popup("NO!");
There, now, we came to end, we look in our memory for the last function that was assigned/called and end processing for that function. Now we continue with the code.
Surprise! There is no more code, tell the engine to
1) Notify the user that there is no more code to process
2) Repeat
OR, we can use method handlers.
Example (THIS MAY NOT BE VERY ACCURATE, I'm too lazy to pull up my IDE and check)- Code:
static int doCode(string toDo)
{
if(checkLogicOperator(toDo) == true)
{ doLogicOperator(toDo); return 1; } //return 1, as in, it is a logic operand
else
{ string nul += new EventHandler(toDo); return 2; } //return 2, as in, it was executed
}

There is an app on my Android called Phit. It's basically a simple puzzle game where you get a set of pieces that you have to "phit" in a specific area.
I don't think it has been made for apple yet...so maybe you could make a game like it just a little different. It has over 1000 levels you can do and I have played it for a couple months and only on level 150!

You could also make an app starring characters from My Little Pony. Then you could tap into that inexplicable fanbase and make millions.

Not to be biased or anything but that....might actually work. But then again, lawsuits

Oh Hasbro is actually really cool about the use of their IP. You can even see full episodes of the show on Youtube, right after they release on iTunes(no DMCAs are ever filed). Remember, the show is just a marketing tool for the toys. They might contact you to negotiate with you for a cut of the profits, but given how ravenous their fanbase is, I doubt they'll shut you down without talking first.
